Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) Cell

The Government of India had introduced new education policy i.e “National Education Policy 2020”. This policy proposes the revision and revamping of all aspects of the education structure, including its regulation and governance, to create a new system that is aligned with the aspirational goals of 21 st century education while building upon India’s traditions and value systems.

Under this New Education Policy, 2020, University Grants Commission (UGC) in concurrence with Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) scheme. ABC is an initiative of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Ministry of Education (MoE) respectively.

ABC mainly focuses on:

  • Student centric education – enables students’ mobility across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
  • Flexible teaching learning approaches – helps in integration of skills and experiences into a credit-based system.
  • Encourages inter-disciplinary approach in studies.
  • Allows students to learn at their convenience, drop education mid-way and pick it up again as per their choice and convenience across India. This indirectly decreases the dropout ratio in HEIs.

Role of Universities in ABC scheme:

  • Adikavi Nannaya University and other Universities issue academic awards to students like degrees, diplomas, provisionals and certificates along with mark sheets.
  • Students entering into employment or pursuing higher studies need a credible, authentic and convenient mechanism for access, retrieval and validation of academic awards.
  • Maintenance of academic awards in a digital depository enables educational institutions, students and employers to access/ retrieve/verify through online. This eliminates illegal practices like forging of certificates and mark-sheets.
  • The ABC was established on the line of National Academic Depository (NAD) which is a 24X7 online store house of all academic awards like degrees, diplomas, certificates, mark-sheets etc.
  • Hence, registry and onboard of all affiliated colleges is required to enable students learn flexibly and mobility of students across higher education institutes in the country with an appropriate “credit transfer” mechanism according to their choice and convenience.
